When creating your Facebook business page, you must immediately choose the 'type' of page you want to create. This can be difficult, as you cannot see the options, advantages and possible disadvantages of the different types of pages…

Today I will explain for you exactly what different types of pages there are, what characteristics they have and when it is best to choose that type of page. Of course you can also use this article if you already have a complete Facebook page 😉

6 types of Facebook pages

We start with the different types of pages you can choose from.

When do you choose Local company or local place?

You choose this type of page when you actually an offline location have an address (1 location) where the target group can visit you.

Think of an office, shop, restaurant, hotel, museum, etc. You have the option to add opening hours and information about parking facilities, among other things. For example, if you choose the 'restaurant' category, you also have the option to indicate the type of cuisine and add your menu.

In addition, people can “check in” with your company via Facebook.

The list of categories is very long, but it gives a clear idea of when you would choose this type of page.

When do you choose Company, organization or institution?

Do you have multiple locations, no official opening hours or a visiting address and opening hours are not important? Then you choose Company, organization or institution.

Examples of organizations with this type of page are web shops, foundations, insurance companies, banks and political parties.

Basically you have the same options (features) available on your page here as Local Businesses, such as checking in and adding an address, opening hours and a map.

The categories for this type of page are:

When do you choose Brand or product?

Are you the owner of a brand or product that is sold in various stores or web shops? Then you choose this type of company page. Think of the Coca-Colas of this world 😉

You can also choose Brand or product if you have a weblog or website and you would like to create a Facebook page for this. You can then choose 'website' as the category.

When do you choose Artist, band or famous person?

This type of page actually speaks for itself, you choose this option if you are an artist or (officially) represent a well-known person.

Don't just think of singers or actors, big bloggers, vloggers, politicians and entrepreneurs can also choose this type of page! The specific options you have for your Page depend on the category you choose. For example, politicians can indicate their political preference, bands can indicate in which genre their music belongs, etc.

Below are the different category options:

When do you choose Entertainment?

If you want to provide people with information about TV programs, sporting events, films, books or magazines, choose the Entertainment type.

When do you choose Charity or community?

This page is managed by the community itself. As an administrator you have no control, it is a page on which all members can change data. In addition, there are no subcategories to choose from.

Non-profit organizations should also opt for the “Company, organization or institution” page! You then retain control over the page and you can choose a subcategory when creating the page.

We have now covered the different page types: time to list which functions you can use if you choose a certain category.

Questions you may have after creating your Facebook business page

Yay, you've created a Facebook business page and figured out which type and category best suits your business. You may still have various questions related to the settings or the daily management of your page. We highlight five of them to help you get started!

I have two same company pages for the same company: can I merge them?

Of course! However, your role and your page must meet a few important conditions: you must be an administrator in any case both pages, the pages must have a similar name and represent the same thing, and then the addresses of physical locations must match. You can then merge the pages as follows:

Go to facebook.com/pages/merge, or to business.facebook.com/pages/merge if your page is set to Business Manager. Select two pages you want to merge, then click Continue. Then click Request Merge.

Merging combines data from both pages, such as likes and check-ins. However, the data from the page that you do not want to keep will be permanently deleted. If you cannot merge the pages, then the pages do not meet the conditions and it is useful to investigate this further.

How do I change the name of my page?

To change the name of your Page, you must have the admin role. The steps you then take are:

Click on Info, you will see this on the left of your page. Click edit next to your page name. Enter a new name and click Continue. Review your request and then click Request Change.

If the option to change is not available, several factors may be involved. For example, you may have the wrong page role, the page name has recently changed, or the option is not currently available in your location. Also, be aware that changing the page name will not affect your username!

I have a personal profile, but I want to turn it into a Facebook business page. Is this possible, and how do I go about it?

You can only convert your personal account into a (company) page once. The profile photo, cover photo and your name will be transferred to the page, but the posts on your profile will not. The name in your personal account becomes the name of the page, and you can manage the page from your personal account. How do you convert a personal profile?

Go to https://www.facebook.com/pages/create/migrate. Click Get Started and follow the prompts.

Can I change the category of my page afterwards?

Yes, this is possible. You can even do this as often as you want. Click About on the left side of your page, then under General click Edit (next to the word Category). Then you enter up to three categories, and select an option from the drop-down menu. Then click Save. If you don't see a category that describes your page well, choose the best available option. Because the functions may differ per category, you may suddenly have more/different functions after changing the category(ies).

How do I create a Messenger greeting for people who visit my Page?

It is of course nice to welcome your visitors in a way that suits you and your company. So create a custom greeting that appears in Facebook chat messages and in the Messenger app. This greeting appears the first time someone starts a conversation with you (page). You make it like this:

Click Settings at the top of your page. Then click Messages (left), and select Yes under the Show Messenger Greeting option. Then click Change, enter your personal greeting and click Save.
