News from Google: Making search results more local and relevant

When you search on Google, we strive to deliver the most useful results for your search. Today, around one in five searches on Google are related to location, so delivering locally relevant search results is an essential part of giving you the most accurate information.

To determine this optimal experience, your location determines the country service for which you receive results for Google Search and Maps. Historically, these services have been marked and accessed via country code top-level domain names (ccTLD) such as [google.ng for Nigeria] or [google.com.br for Brazil]. You may also have entered the relevant ccTLD in your browser.

Today we updated the way we report land services on the mobile web, the Google app for iOS, and desktop search and maps. Now the choice of land service is no longer indicated per domain. Instead, by default, you will be shown the country service that corresponds to your location. So if you live in Australia you will automatically receive Australia land service, but if you travel to New Zealand your results will automatically switch to New Zealand land service. Upon return to Australia, you will seamlessly return to Australian land service.
